Caring for your Carpet
We all know nothing lasts forever, but to try and keep your carpet looking better for longer we have a few hints and tips:
Vacuuming isn’t everybody’s favourite chore, but it will help preserve your carpet! Two or three times a week if possible, or for very busy households almost every day you may feel necessary. Vacuuming will also help to prevent the carpet from flattening, especially in hallways and stairs.
- Vacuum loop pile carpets with a cylinder cleaner using the suction head only. Avoid beater heads and brushes as they will catch and lift the fibres, which may give your carpet a bobbled effect after time.
- For cut pile carpets and upright cleaner with a beater bar and brush would be most effective.
A large, strong doormat will help to reduce the amount of dirt from outside being spread around your house and making your carpets look better for longer.
If possible try to avoid laying light coloured carpets next to external entrances, the dirty marks from shoes may start to show.
Feet of heavy furniture can sometimes cause indentations, if this has already happened we would advise just to use a coin to tease the carpet back upright in its original position. To prevent this in the first place we would recommend moving your furniture slightly from time to time, just so it’s not sitting in the same spot for long periods of time.
It is always a good idea to have your carpet professionally cleaned, depending on how busy your household is this could vary between 12 months to 24 months.
You can be as careful as possible, but from time to time accidents do happen. For any spillages on a carpet it is best to act immediately. Blot off all the liquid with a dry clean cloth or kitchen roll. If the spillage is semi-solid then remove with a plastic spatula. To clean off the stain use a damp cloth with warm water and maybe a drop of white wine vinegar. Remember to always dab and never rub!
